On the Issues: Public Safety and Protecting Our Children

As a father of two young sons, Steve Stern knows our children are our most precious resource. Over the past year, Steve has supported several bills to protect our children from sexual predators. Steve has ensured that Suffolk County remains one of the most aggressive jurisdictions in our nation when it comes to protecting our children from violent sex offenders.

After the tragic accident of sixteen month old Alec Nelson being backed over by a sport utility vehicle, Steve co-sponsored new legislation which supports requiring the Department of Transportation to issue regulations aimed at reducing these kinds of accidents that frequently kill or injure children. He also co-sponsored Alec’s Week, aimed at raising awareness to prevent these kinds of accidents. Whether assisting victims of domestic violence, vulnerable seniors or protecting our children, Steve Stern has proved to be a champion of public safety.

• Sponsored Legislation establishing "New Advocacy Program for Victims of Domestic Violence.”
• Sponsored legislation in support of tougher penalties for hazing and bullying in public schools.
• Co-sponsored legislation prohibiting registered sex offenders from residing near schools, day care centers, and playgrounds.
• Co-sponsored legislation authorizing the use of electronic monitoring devices for all sex offenders.
• Co-sponsored legislation to enact "Alec's Law" to help protect Suffolk children from SUV accidents.
• Co-sponsored legislation designating the last week in April as "Alec's Week".
• Co-sponsored legislation establishing a policy to restrict placement of sex offenders.
• Co-sponsored legislation prohibiting sex offenders from loitering on or about the grounds of playgrounds and day care centers and other locations where minors gather.
